Artist Statement

As far back as I can recall, I've always wanted to create things.
Whether it be live-action films, animated cartoons or some scribbly drawings - making something tangible from an idea is my passion. Drawing has always been part of my life, and capturing emotion through drawings
still gives me a thrill to this day.

I don't make art just for show.
If I did, my work would be more mainstream, more commercial. That being said, I love to share what I do with the world, but if someone out there doesn't "get it" that does not stop me. I do what I do out of love and if people enjoy it, then that just adds another level of appreciation to the work.

While I deal primarily in fiction, I get my inspiration from the everyday reality we all inhabit. After all, life is already pretty darn funny.

Thoughts on "Livestock"

"Livestock" is an on-going comic strip. What originated as a political-commentary gag-panel has become a character-driven, personal exploration of humor and the human condition. I've been inspired by animals, and have been an avid cartoon enthusiast, my whole life. "Livestock" is my own way of combining my childhood imagination and my desire for elaborate character development all in one venue.

I believe cartooning is a wonderfully expressive medium that invokes new ways to be original and tell stories. The art itself pushes oneself into thinking differently, especially in regards to the familiar. My mission with this strip is to achieve two things in each edition (excluding the occasional goofiness): to explore complex issues in a light-hearted and humorous way, and to give each panel the appearance of being extracted from an animated cartoon. The latter comes from my love and appreciation for animation, which has been another incarnation of "Livestock."

Although it has been published in several newspapers, "Livestock" has always been a labor of love and was never intended to be a mass-syndicated strip. My long-term goals with this strip however, are to keep it going as long as I can, and to continue to grow with my fellow farm friends.
